Grade 8, ELA/Reading

Grade 8
ELA/Reading

Hello, eighth-graders!  Summer has come and gone, and we're getting back in the groove of schoolwork and high learning expectations!

This year, we will be spending a great deal of time writing personal narratives and expository essays and editing/revising our writing, so it is imperative that you jot down notes when I introduce new skills and ask questions when you are unsure!

You will be required not only during class time but also outside of class, as well.  You should dedicate at least 30 minutes-1 hour of your daily time to reading.  Research shows that reading cultivates imagination, helps us to better understand other cultures, allows for the growth of vocabulary, and overall, reading helps shape us into humanitarians.  Additionally, there are two novels students will be required to have a copy of by certain dates.  Copies can be hard copy and/or digital.  Be advised that if students would like to have an audiobook, they are still required to have a digital/hard copy.

Below you will find our six-6 Week Units:

ELA/Reading General Course Outline*:
Unit 1: Fiction Texts & Personal Narratives
Unit 2: Non-Fiction Texts & Poetry
Unit 3: Exploring Informational Texts & Drama
Unit 4: Creating Connections Across All Genres
Unit 5: Generating Connections: Persuasive Texts & Media
Unit 6: Producing Research
*Units may be edited and/or modified at the Facilitator’s discretion.

If you have any more questions/concerns, please come ask me!  I am always willing to have a book talk and/or help you edit and revise any paperwork that you may have.

I hope this has answered any questions you may have, and I look forward to working with you (and your parent(s)/guardian(s)) this 2018-2019 school year!

Ms. Mendoza
