Grade 6, ELA/Reading

Grade 6
ELA/Reading

Hello, sixth-graders!  It is my understanding that you have never had one single subject area class.  As such, let me give you some information regarding the subject: ELA/Reading.

ELA stands for English Language Arts.  In this subject, we focus on grammar, which includes studying and mastering proper capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and the overall understanding of English language skills.  We will be spending a great deal of time editing and revising our writing, so it is imperative that you jot down notes when I introduce new skills and ask questions when you are unsure.

In Reading, we are studying, comprehending, and growing our literacy skills.  This means that we will be reading a lot of fiction and non-fiction literature.
You will be required to read not only during class time but also outside of class, as well.  You should dedicate at least 30 minutes-1 hour of your daily time to reading.  Research shows that reading cultivates imagination, helps us to better understand other cultures, allows for the growth of vocabulary, and overall, reading helps shape us into humanitarians.
Additionally, there are two novels students will be required to have a copy of by certain dates.  Copies can be hard copy and/or digital.  Be advised that if students would like to have an audiobook, they are still required to have a digital/hard copy.

Below you will find our six-6 Week Units...
